About SmartRoutes:
SmartRoutes builds route planning and optimisation software for last-mile delivery. Couriers, retailers and logistics teams use our platform to plan smarter routes, get drivers out the door faster and keep customers updated on every drop.
We're based in the heart of Cork City and have grown quickly over the past eight four years. Our mobile apps sit at the sharp end of that product: they're what drivers rely on, all day, on the road.
About the Role:
We're looking for a native mobile developer to help build the next generation of our driver and customer apps. You'll bring deep expertise on Android (Kotlin) or iOS (Swift), and be keen to build on the other platform too, working across both apps as your skills grow.
We also want someone who is genuinely curious about how AI is changing software development. We don't have a dedicated UI/UX designer, so you'll own the look and feel of our apps too, using AI to design, prototype and iterate. You'll use AI coding and design tools day to day, help us figure out where they make us faster and where they don't, and have the chance to build AI-powered features into the product itself.
Responsibilities:
- Build and maintain native features in our mobile apps, from design handoff to release
- Work closely with our Tech Lead on architecture, performance and reliability, especially offline use, background location and battery life on the road
- Own UI/UX for our apps: work with product and drivers to understand real workflows, then design, prototype and refine screens using AI design tools (e.g. Figma AI, Claude, v0) and platform guidelines
- Use AI coding assistants (e.g. Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot) to speed up delivery, while owning the quality, security and correctness of what ships
- Write tests, review code and help shape our engineering and AI practices
- Monitor apps in production and troubleshoot issues using crash reporting, logs and metrics
What we are looking for:
- 2+ years building and shipping native mobile apps
- Deep expertise in one native platform, Kotlin (Jetpack Compose, coroutines) or Swift (SwiftUI, async/await), and a genuine willingness to learn and ship on the other
- A strong eye for UI/UX and good knowledge of Material Design and Apple's Human Interface Guidelines, with the confidence to make design decisions yourself
- A solid grasp of the mobile app lifecycle, background work, permissions and platform constraints
- Experience integrating REST APIs, push notifications (FCM / APNs) and local data storage
- Good knowledge of architecture patterns (MVVM, MVI or similar), dependency injection and testing
- Hands-on use of AI tools across both development and design, and good judgement about when to trust their output
- Comfort with Git, code review and CI/CD for mobile (e.g. GitHub Actions, Fastlane)
- Clear communication and a team-first attitude
A Computer Science degree is welcome, but equivalent experience counts just as much.
Nice to have:
- Some hands-on experience with your second platform, or with Kotlin Multiplatform
- Figma or similar design tools, and running quick usability tests with real users
- Maps, GPS and location-heavy apps (Google Maps / Mapbox SDKs, geofencing)
- Building with LLM APIs, or on-device ML (ML Kit, Core ML)
- Observability tools such as Firebase Crashlytics, Sentry or Datadog
- AWS or other cloud platforms, and a SaaS background
- Some Python or TypeScript for scripting and backend work
- Logistics, delivery or field-service products
How we work with AI:
We treat AI as part of the toolkit, not a replacement for engineering judgement. You'll have access to modern AI coding and design tools and the freedom to experiment with them. With no dedicated designer, AI is how you'll own UI/UX: generating concepts, prototyping flows and testing ideas with drivers quickly.
We expect you to understand and stand behind every line you ship, whoever or whatever wrote the first draft. You don't need to be an AI expert. We care most that you're curious, keep learning and share what works with the team.
